 The job of the children

The job of the children is the participation of persons under 18 in activities with purpose economic and resembling more or less hard in of an occupation par an adulte.

At international level, the international Organization of job (ILO [1]) defines it by comparing the age with the strenuousness of task, at least for the children of more than twelve years (see more low for details).

In practice, among the hardworking children, they differentiate "allowable « job (light, integrating with the education of the child and with family life, allowing schooling) and "unacceptable" job (too much for a long time, too young, too dangerous, etc); it is this last that recuperates in general notion of « job of the children ». They think that about 350 million children [2] are concerned in the world; more than 8 millions are in one of the « worse working forms of the children »:  children soldiers, prostitution, pornography, forced job, traffics and illicit activities.

Rectangle job of the children is the subject of numerous ideas accepted in the western world, because it is especially known by mediatized scandals: a child at job is typically seen as a "child-slave", in a country of the wind the world, used in an Asiatic textile workshop for a big mark of clothes or enfant of the streets in Amérique of the South [3]. In reality, there are children at job in practically all countries of the world including from developed countries as Italy or the United States; plants and textile workshops conceal the fact that more than three quarters of this job is in agriculture or domestic activities, in the family sphere;  and if the children-slaves exist, they form only a minority. It existed as well before industrialization or globalization, even if these two phenomena returned the more visible job of the children.

If the elimination of « worse working forms » is not discussed, the abrogation is on the other hand a subject of debate for other children; the conflict against poverty and poor working conditions remains a common objective to the "abolitionists" as to the more pragmatic organizations.
Since 1992, IPEC program tries to federate undertaken actions.
